When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blessed assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.
(repeat chorus)
My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!
(repeat chorus)
And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.
(end chorus)
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blessed assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.
(repeat chorus)
My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!
(repeat chorus)
And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.
(end chorus)
Praise the Lord for His comfort in the midst of trials, the reminders of just how much we have to be grateful for to Christ, and the promise of His return!

I LOVE that song. I get goose bumps singing it. Praise the Lord for the honesty and beauty in this song.
This is one of my favorite hymns, as well. A few years ago, the church that I attended made a recording of our worship band and choir doing some of our favorite songs, and my friend Carol recorded this one. To this day, whenever I think of that hymn, I always hear it in her voice.

Thanks, Jess. A wonderful classic. I am home sick from church this morning, but this provided encouragement (and I think my dog appreciated my rendition).
This is one of my favorites also!
I love that hymn too! It's my favourite. And the story behind it is also fascinating.
Jess,
I love the old hymns! I have been going through a fabulous book that has the hymn stories along with the hymns. I love newer praise choruses as well, however, there is something stabilizing about the richness of spiritual doctrine found in the old hymns. Since I grew up on hymns, they bring me back to the spiritual foundation I received as a child and are reassuring, convicting and comforting. Thanks for sharing your favorite.
Thanks for posting! I grew up on hymns like that!
One of my faves too. Puts it all in perspective.
Jess,
If I remember correctly, the writer of that hymn received word that his wife and children (4 of them?) perished when the ship they were on went down. Later, he traveled to the area of the ocean where they were lost and wrote the hymn. It was written out of deep pain.
