Quick Query: TEN BOOKS?

If you've been around here for awhile, you know how much I love to read.

So today I'd like to hear from you:
  1. NAME 3 BOOKS YOU'VE READ THAT HAVE CHALLENGED YOU OR MADE YOU THINK
  2. NAME 3 BOOKS YOU WOULD LIKE TO READ
  3. NAME YOUR 3 FAVORITE BOOKS OF THE BIBLE
  4. NAME ONE BOOK (different from those listed in #1 & #3, if possible) YOU'VE READ THAT YOU WOULD RECOMMEND TO ANY CHRISTIAN WOMAN
Can't wait to hear from you ladies; I always enjoy reading through the answers to these Quick Queries.

(And yes, if you can't think of three in each of the first three categories, well, then, just list the one or two that you CAN think of!) Just like all of the quick queries, there are no "right" answers here- just answer!

  5. 1. Three books that have challenged me:

There Are No Children Here - Alex Kotlowitz
    Babycatcher - Peggy Vincent
(The above two are not Christian books, but the first is a book about the situation of the people living in projects in Chicago, which is both a city that I love and to me, a call to serve; Babycatcher is about a midwife, and really challenged me to think about my scope of practice as a future midwife and what I will and won't be willing to do...)
Through Gates of Splendor - Elisabeth Elliot

    2. Three books I'd like to read:

    Narnia series
    Pilgrim's Progress
The Gulag Archipeligo - Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn - at some point in my life I want to finish a Russian novel. (In English)

    3. Three Favorite Books of Bible:
    Ruth
    Ecclesiates
    1 John

  6. Three Favorite Books: (only THREE!)
    1. I love Shepherding Your Child's Heart by Ted Tripp and am currently re-reading it. It really deals with the heart of the parent in the way that we parent. Very good!
    2. The Bible. Sure that should be #1. Always good for a good think.
    3. Life Management for Busy Women by Elizabeth George. The recording of this is great to listen to while doing housework.

Three Books I Would Like to Read:
    1. Planting Missional Churches, which is on my shelf but I haven't gotten to it.
2.Simple Sewing with a French Twist, because I've heard its a great crafty book.

  8. I can never answer questions about books with any sense of certainty...there are too many, I love them all. The other day I had to drop off my kids books at the library. I didn't have time to browse, but I did go in just to inhale. Yes, it's a sickness.

    OK, I'll try:

1> Three books that have challenged or made me think:

*Chosen by God by R.C. Sproul
*Dumbing Us Down by John Taylor Gotto (not a Christian book but man the light bulbs were clicking on through the whole thing)
*The Sovereignty of God by A.W. Pink (still need to finish that one)

2>Three Books I would like to read:

    *Knowing God by J.I. Packer
*When I Don't Desire God by John Piper
*Turn Neither To The Right Nor To The Left: A thinking Christian's Guide to Politics and Public Policy
by D. Eric Schansberg (this one has now earned a coveted spot on my nightstand and I will start reading it tonight!)

3>Three favorite books of the Bible:

    Esther
    Job
    Colossians

4>One book I would recommend to Christian women:
I have no idea...too many to pick from. How about, "The book I'm going to write?" :-P

I do recommend anything by Elisabeth Elliot, though.

    1. Reasons for the Hope Within - Alvin Plantinga (editor)

and a gazillion other "literary" books too, but hey, you said only 3

    3. Philippians

One Book everyone should read: Sorry to repeat but,

DON'T WASTE YOUR LIFE - JOHN PIPER

  10. THREE BOOKS THAT HAVE CHALLENGED ME OR MADE ME THINK
1 Stepping Heavenward by Elizabeth Prentiss (every time I've read it I've been at a different stage in my life--single, married, mother--and every time it's like reading a book that's had loads of good stuff added to the good stuff alread in it!)
2 Till We Have Faces by C. S. Lewis
3 Be Committed (Commentary on Ruth & Esther) by Warren Wiersbe

THREE BOOKS I WOULD LIKE TO READ (chosen from among the thousands of others)
    1 What is an Evangelical? by D. M. Lloyd-Jones
2 The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan
3 The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens

  11. Three books that have challenged me/made me think:

    1. The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
    2. The House on the Embankment by Yuri Trifonov (a short novel, although the short story by Trifonov called "The Exchange" is also an incredible work)

Yes, I was a Russian major in college, but these books deal with universal themes. I believe that anyone would benefit from reading them.

    3. How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish

Three books I would like to read:

    1. Easy to Love, Difficult to Discipline by Becky Bailey
    2. Unconditional Parenting by Alfie Kohn
    3. Kids are Worth It by Barbara Coloroso

Three favorite books of the Bible:
    Isaiah, Esther, Psalms

But probably my favorite religious writings are not in the Bible. I enjoy reading many stories and commentaries written by and about scholars over the centuries (e.g. Maimonides, who favored moderation over extremes, and Rabbi Hillel, who was a great teacher and often sparred with his contemporary Rabbi Shammai).

The prayer book our temple uses has a lot of these meditations and commentaries in a section at the beginning.

Not being Christian, I don't feel that it's my place to recommend books to a Christian woman.
